BUR OAK
(Quercus macrocarpa)
Bur oak is a slow growing large tree with yellow, brown or red color in the fall, a broad crown and stout spreading branches. A mature tree can reach heights of 70-80 feet. Bur oak is shade intolerant, grows in a variety of soils and is moderately drought resistant.
Wildlife Food & Cover: Excellent food-acorn, insects, browse, buds. Excellent cover-nesting, perching, escape, dens, cavities.
Flowers: Inconspicuous
Fruit: Acorns - late summer
Ecosystem: Oak Savanna, Dry Oak Forest, White Pine Hardwood Forest, Lowland Hardwood Forest
Other: Tolerant of city living, although somewhat resistant to oak wilt, do not prune April-June.
