BUTTERNUT

Butternut is a stately tree not common in the area with thick sparse twigs and branches and edible nuts.
Wildlife Food & Cover:Good food - nuts, twigs. Fair cover - nesting, perching, feeding
Flowers: Inconspicuous yellow-green drooping clusters in spring
Fruit:Sweet brown tan nut with fuzzy husk, late autumn
Ecosystem: Mesic Oak Forest, Lowland Hardwood Forest, White Pine Hardwood Forest
Special Note: The Butternut produces a substance in roots, fruit husks and leaves that is toxic (allelopathic) to some plant species, and strongly inhibits the growth of seedlings, including their own.
